Review: Iomega eGo Encrypt, secure and portable hard drive

A major risk with portable hard drives is that they are easy to steal. If you plan to store important data on your hard disk, it is important that you protect the data in different ways. Iomega eGo Encrypt is a portable drive that has built-in protection.
Iomega eGo Encrypt looks about like most portable hard drives in the company's eGo series. They build on the hard disks of size 2.5 inches, which is positive in the way that they both will be relatively small and does not require any external power other than the USB connection. You do not need to lug along a power adapter. The chassis is solid steel and around the connector has a protective rubber. Iomega calls its solution Drop Guard, and the hard drive is designed to withstand the drop from 2.1 meters height.
The first time you plug in the device starts a program that asks you to fill in the disk's own serial number and a password. You can also choose to complete the password questions, the usual about where you were born and what your mother's name before she married. These questions are then used if you forget your password. The next time you connect the Iomega eGo Encrypt to a computer, to start a program that requests the password. When you enter the lock disk and you can use it like any other entity whatsoever. In addition to password protection, all data is also stored encrypted using AES encryption to 128 bits.
Through the program, Flash Memory Toolkit, I tested how fast it was to write and read to the device. The complete numbers you see in the table of images below. The speed was around 20 MB per second, which may be regarded as clearly acceptable. The data is said to also be encrypted and it takes a bit of power.
Iomega's drives have always been a bit more than most others in terms of price. 1900 SEK is the asking price for the Iomega eGo Encrypt, but I think this is not too much. The unit holds 320 GB and the security offered is clearly worth the money, if you want to make sure that no one can access your files.
