Dell, HP, Lenovo not enough green
The NGOs praised Apple and Acer to be the only firmly committed to phasing out these substances. Apple has already met its commitment to have all their products without PVC and FB by the end of 2008. This is with one exception, which is a technical challenge: to get certified from PVC free power cables.
To their credit, Dell Inspiron 510m Battery and Lenovo IBM 40Y6793 battery are both in the workplace.
Dell Inspiron 710m battery has a desktop, a notebook, and several models have screens that reduced use of PVC and FB, and some monitor models that are free of these substances. Lenovo also has two models available from PVC and BFR-free. HP laptop Battery is the one farthest back trails and yet to bring any models with even lower use of PVC and FB.
Toxic substances include vinyl plastic (commonly known as PVC) and brominated flame retardants (FB). Lenovo has delayed the deadline of one year, while HP and Dell 6Y270 yet to set a new timetable.
Apart from PC (and Mac) manufacturers, the driver of Greenpeace also states other online sellers. The biggest change in classification is the great leap from 15th to 4th place made by Philips. The company has greatly improved its position on taking financial responsibility for recycling their own e-waste, but still needs to implement a system to put it into effect.
Struggling with economic recession, the biggest names in PC makers seem to lag for staying clean.
Apple is not just a PC maker, is a maker of Mac, which produces fewer products than the other three companies. However, this only means that it is even more important that the other three stay committed.
